Teen Defensive Driving
The Importance of Teen Defensive Driving in Atlanta
Atlanta is a dangerous city for drivers. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recorded 1,179 traffic fatalities and over 116,000 injuries in 2013. In fact, fatal crashes happen so often around the city that I-285 was named America’s deadliest interstate, with more fatal accidents per mile than any other major roadway.
Looking at statistics on teen driving is even more disheartening. Owing to their inexperience, 16-19-year-olds have the highest risk of motor vehicle crashes. They are three times more likely to be in a fatal crash than driver groups aged 20 and older. Looking at a larger cohort of 15-24-year-olds, they represent only 14 percent of the population but are responsible for around 30 percent of motor vehicle injury costs.
Pretty spooky when you put it in words, right? The good news is that you can do something about it. Parents can go beyond casual driver’s education courses and introduce their teen drivers to real situations where crashes are likely. Wet roads, sudden hairpin turns, even recovering from a fishtail can all be learned with a professional driving instructor at their side. That was our goal when we created the AMP Street Smarts program, and we like to think it helps save lives every year.
AMP’s Street Smarts Atlanta Teen Defensive Driving Program
When we founded AMP, we wanted it to be a place for more than just die-hard enthusiasts who already had hundreds of hours of track experience under their belt. We also thought it could be a place where the inexperienced learned — where they were introduced to concepts that changed the way they thought about driving. By teaching them these techniques, we would not only allow them to have fun and be more confident on the road but also help them stay safer and in control in situations that demanded it.
To accomplish this goal, we created our Street Smarts teen training days. There, participants learn how to handle vehicles in a variety of dangerous road situations. They also gain an understanding of the fundamentals of safe driving, including knowing when to be courteous to others. Most importantly, we teach them how to recognize dangerous situations before they occur and respond proactively. With the right know-how, they can take steps to reduce their risk of losing control of their vehicle or avoid problematic situations entirely.
Their course includes an emphasis on developing street and spatial awareness as well as how to get a feel for the weight distribution of their car. They will also get introduced to the skid pad, a huge patch of asphalt we douse in water and challenge drivers to navigate. A driving instructor will accompany them in the front seat, guiding them every step of the way.
The skills your teen learns will stick with them for the rest of their lives, allowing them to stay safe into maturity and pass the knowledge along to others. Rest assured that AMP does not just create safe teen drivers, but safe drivers in general.
Classes are offered in groups of Intermediate drivers (ages 19 and up) as well as young drivers who just received their permit (ages 15-18). Sign your teen up for the best Atlanta teen defensive driving course today!
