Revolutionizing Motorsports: The Zekenetic Foundation’s Journey Towards Inclusivity and Empowerment

Breaking Barriers: Empowering Wheelchair Users in Motorsports

In the adrenaline-fueled world of motorsports, the roar of engines and the rush of speed have long captivated enthusiasts. However, for individuals with physical disabilities, this world seemed a distant dream, bordered by barriers of accessibility and independence. Enter Zeke Massie, a retired Marine Corps member and esteemed member at Atlanta Motorsports Park, whose life took an unexpected turn when an injury left him paralyzed. Rather than succumbing to the constraints of his wheelchair, Massie fueled his passion for speed into a groundbreaking initiative: the Zekenetic Foundation, a beacon of hope and revolution in track driving for wheelchair users.

From Injury to Innovation: Zeke Massie’s Trailblazing Initiative

Massie’s odyssey to the racetrack commenced in 1996 at Road Atlanta, where the racing bug first bit him during a Panoz Racing School event. Despite the daunting physical challenges, Massie’s unyielding spirit and love for competition found a new outlet in quad rugby, a sport that offered not just an athletic challenge but also a sense of community and resilience. It was within this community that Massie envisioned a broader horizon for individuals like himself – the thrilling, boundary-pushing world of motorsports. Massie started doing 1-2 track days a month with Gran Turismo East, immersing himself in the exhilarating world of track days. In a serendipitous twist of fate, Massie met his future wife, Alicia Massie, a founding member of Atlanta Motorsports Park. She brought him to AMP, where they began doing track days together and the rest is history. Despite his physical limitations, Massie tackled the track utilizing hand controls to navigate the twists and turns alongside Alicia, forging a unique bond through their shared passion for motorsports.

Driving Towards Empowerment: The Zekenetic Foundation’s Impact

Massie’s journey into the world of motorsports was not just a personal quest but a pioneering step towards empowerment. His vision materialized with the inception of the Zekenetic Foundation, named as a blend of his own name and the kinetic energy that drives the world of motorsports. This initiative was not just about enabling wheelchair users to drive on the racetrack; it was about rewriting the narrative of what is possible, about challenging and changing the status quo.

Beyond Speed: Redefining Possibilities in Motorsports

At the heart of Zekenetic’s operations is the flagship vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf GTI, meticulously customized to cater to the diverse needs of wheelchair users. This car is not just a piece of machinery but a vessel of freedom, equipped with four different styles of hand controls to ensure that every driver can find a system that works best for them. Sure Grip Hand Controls, a hand control company based in Canada, graciously donated not only the drivers side hand controls for the car, but passenger-side gas and brake pedals as-well. The addition of passenger-side gas and brake pedals allows for instructor intervention, ensuring safety without compromising the thrill of the drive. Additionally, the Golf GTI has been outfitted with 4-point harnesses, providing secure seating for drivers of all abilities. The installation of Konig wheels not only enhances the car’s aesthetics but also improves handling and performance. The wrap adoring the vehicle was generously donated, adding a touch of personalization and flair. Zeke’s expertise extends beyond drives; he has overseen the implementation of preventive maintenance measures to keep the car in top condition, ensuring reliability and longevity. Bridgestone tires have been selected for their durability and grip, offering confidence-inspiring traction on both road and track. Leg straps have been integrated into the design to provide additional stability and support for drivers during high-speed maneuvers. Zeke’s knowledge and passion for driving are evident in every aspect of the Golf GTI’s design, with careful attention paid to making the driving experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible while minimizing distractions.

A Thrilling Horizon: Zekenetic Foundation’s Vision for Exhilarating Experiences

The transformative impact of Zekenetic stretches far beyond the mechanics of modified vehicles. It lies in the joy, the exhilaration, and the newfound sense of belonging experienced by the participants. Zeke Massie, with his indomitable spirit, has not only opened the racetrack to wheelchair users but has also fostered a community where barriers are dismantled, and spirits soar. The foundation’s mission, deeply focused on friends and family, extends the realm of motorsports to everyone, proving that passion and determination know no bounds.

Community, Innovation, and Accessibility: The Zekenetic Revolution

The Zekenetic Foundation’s journey towards making motorsports accessible for wheelchair users is significantly bolstered by the support and sponsorship from various corners of the racing and business communities. This collaborative effort ensures that the foundation can provide track time at minimal to no cost, thereby opening up opportunities for participants who otherwise might never experience the exhilarating world of racing. Central to this support system is James Marcellana, the owner of Jzilla Track Days, whose belief in Massie’s vision led to invaluable contributions, including covering seat time and registration fees for Zekenetic drivers.
