Race Day Report 7/5/20

Spec Miata Race

Round five of the Atlanta Motorsports Park Summer Racing Series took place on Sunday and even though the field size was reduced due to the holiday weekend the racing was still tight and entertaining.

The first race of the day consisted of seven Spec Miatas led by James Kaney and Richard Spaeth who battled wheel to wheel as soon as the green flag fell. Spaeth led for about half the race and was under constant pressure from a quicker Kaney.

This battle allowed Jason Bergstrom to stay close to the top two as they battled for the opening laps of the race. Kaney was quicker and finally found his way past Spaeth for the lead at the exit of turn six.

While they battled at the front of the field, Tal Tsfany locked up his brakes and spun out eventually forcing him to retire from the race. Bergstrom had fallen back from the front two as well but still managed to grab a podium in third.

Once Kaney took the lead he quickly created a gap and went on to win the opening race of the day by six seconds. Spaeth finished second followed by Bergstrom, Stephens, Miller, and Griffin.

Downforce Class

Nicholas Pearson started on pole but Noah Ping went around the outside of the polesitter into turn one on the opening lap. Pearson suffered a technical issue at the end of the opening lap and was unable to fight back against Noah Ping.

This promoted Noah’s father Jeffrey Ping into second but Noah was already too far down the road to be caught. Noah continued to push as hard as he could for the 20-minute race and went on to win by a staggering 30-second margin.

Jeffrey Ping crossed the line in second to secure a Ping 1-2 with John Pearson rounding off the podium followed by Keith Roberts.

The next round of the AMP Summer Championship Series will be held on August 15th. Spectating at the track is always free on race day so make sure you catch all the action next month.
